The Netherlands runs the EU baseline with minimal friction: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, the 21-day wait, and a USDA-endorsed EU health certificate (plus a signed owner declaration — English is fine) with arrival within 10 days. No titer, no tapeworm, no advance notification: on arrival at Schiphol or another designated point, take your pet through the red goods to declare channel.

The Netherlands also has no breed import ban — its 1990s pit-bull law was repealed — and behaviour-based rules apply instead. Two housekeeping notes: pets under 15 weeks are refused, and a dog staying longer than 3 months must be registered in the Dutch database by a vet within 2 weeks of arrival.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). The Netherlands is achievable in under a month; the 21-day post-vaccination wait is the floor. No advance notice is needed — declare your pet at the red customs channel on arrival.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted and scanned BEFORE the rabies vaccination — a shot given before the chip does not count and must be redone.
  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip; a primary vaccination requires a 21-day wait before entry (shot day = day 0). No titer test from the US. The Netherlands refuses pets under 15 weeks — no young-animal exception.
  3. EU health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS (+ owner declaration)
A USDA-accredited vet completes the EU non-commercial certificate (via VEHCS) and USDA APHIS endorses it; arrive within 10 days of endorsement, travelling within 5 days of your pet. Sign the owner's declaration (English is fine) and carry both. After entry the certificate covers onward EU travel (6 months under the 2026 framework — NVWA's page may still show the older 4-month figure).

Arrival, the Dutch way

Travel within 5 days of your pet, carry the endorsed certificate and owner declaration, and declare at the red channel. Unaccompanied or commercial shipments have a much stricter path (Schiphol border control only) — keep your pet on your itinerary.

Staying longer?

Dogs staying over 3 months must be registered in the national database by a Dutch vet within 2 weeks — a resident's duty that visitors often miss.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Good news — Netherlands (EU) isn't a CDC high-risk country, so the return is simple. A US-vaccinated dog needs only the free CDC Dog Import Form (a receipt valid 6 months, reusable), a microchip, to be at least 6 months old, and to appear healthy — no titer or endorsed rabies certificate for re-entry. Cats have no CDC requirement either way (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).

FAQ

How long does it take to bring a dog from the US to the Netherlands?
About 3–4 weeks from a standing start: microchip and rabies vaccination, the 21-day wait, then the USDA-endorsed EU certificate within 10 days of arrival.
Do I need to notify the Netherlands before arriving?
No — no advance notice is required for an accompanied pet. Just declare your pet at the red 'goods to declare' customs channel on arrival.
Does the Netherlands ban any breeds?
No — the old pit-bull law was repealed; rules are behaviour-based (municipalities can order muzzles or leashes for individual dogs).
Is it different for cats?
Cats follow the identical chain, minus the dog-registration duty for long stays. Tapeworm treatment never applies to cats. Use the cat toggle in the planner.
