The Dominican Republic is straightforward to enter: no import permit for a personal pet, no quarantine, and no parasite-treatment requirement. You need a rabies vaccination (for a first shot, given at least 30 days before travel) and a USDA-endorsed health certificate — valid just 10 days, so issued close to departure.

The part travelers underestimate is coming home. The DR is on the CDC's high-rabies-risk list, so bringing a dog back to the US must be set up before you leave.

Minimum lead time: about 1 months (30 days). About a month from a standing start: a first rabies vaccination needs 30 days before you travel. Already-vaccinated pets can go as soon as the certificate is arranged. The real planning is the return to the US.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (30 days before departure)
    Required for any pet old enough — eligibility age is 12 weeks. For a first (primary) vaccination, at least 30 days must pass before departure. Boosters given while the previous shot is still valid need no wait. A pet under 12 weeks at export may be certified as too young to vaccinate.
    Bringing a dog back to the US? Microchip it BEFORE this rabies shot, or the vaccination won't count for US re-entry.

  2. Health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    The international health certificate (form NL 0724), issued by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS via VEHCS. It is valid for 10 days after issuance, so issue it within 10 days of arrival. No parasite treatment is required for the DR.

The return trip is the hard part (for dogs)

Because the DR is CDC high-risk, a dog returning to the US needs: a microchip implanted before its rabies shot, to be 6+ months old at re-entry, a CDC Dog Import Form, and a USDA-endorsed "Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination" form completed before you leave the US. (Export health certificates issued after 31 July 2025 are no longer accepted for re-entry.) Set this up at the same vet visit as your outbound paperwork. Cats have none of these return requirements.

The 10-day certificate window

The health certificate is valid only 10 days from issue, so book the USDA-accredited vet and APHIS endorsement close to your travel date — not weeks ahead.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Dominican Republic is a CDC high-risk country for dog rabies — set up the return BEFORE you leave. The step people miss: a Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination must be completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA before your dog departs the US (and the microchip must have been implanted before the rabies shot, or the vaccination is invalid for re-entry). Before flying back, also file the free CDC Dog Import Form — a single-entry receipt for your arrival date. Your dog must be at least 6 months old and appear healthy. Skip the pre-departure certification and a US-vaccinated dog can face a CDC-registered facility, revaccination, and quarantine on return.

Cats are exempt — they aren't subject to the CDC dog-import rules and need no rabies paperwork to re-enter (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).
