Because Canada is an EU-listed country, Spain is a quick route: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait after a primary shot, and no rabies titer test. What you need is the EU animal health certificate, completed by a CFIA-accredited vet and endorsed by an official CFIA veterinarian, with arrival in the EU within 10 days of issue.

Two order traps: a rabies vaccination given before the microchip doesn't count, and the 21-day clock only runs from a shot that counts. Canada also doesn't use the EU pet passport, so the animal health certificate is what you carry.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). Spain is achievable in under a month; the 21-day post-vaccination wait is the floor. The traps are order (chip before shot) and the tight 10-day certificate window at the end.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted and scanned BEFORE — or the same day as — the rabies vaccination. A shot given before the chip does not count and must be redone.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
    Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. You must then wait at least 21 days before entering the EU — the vaccination day is day 0. Boosters kept up to date on schedule need no new wait.
    No rabies titer test is needed: Canada is an EU-listed country.

  3. EU animal health certificate endorsed by CFIA
    A CFIA-accredited veterinarian completes the EU animal health certificate and an official CFIA veterinarian endorses it. Your pet must arrive in the EU within 10 days of issue. After entry the certificate covers onward EU travel for 6 months (or until the rabies vaccination expires).
    Canada does not use the EU pet passport — the animal health certificate is required for each trip. Returning to Canada needs only a valid rabies vaccination certificate (pets over 3 months).

The 10-day certificate window

Within the 10 days before arrival, the CFIA-endorsed EU certificate must be issued; land in the EU inside that window — early in it, so a delayed flight can't strand your paperwork. After entry the certificate covers onward EU travel for 6 months (under the 2026 EU framework) or until the rabies vaccination expires. Tapeworm treatment isn't required for Spain.

Arriving in Spain, and coming home

Enter through a designated Travellers' Point of Entry; the pet must travel within 5 days of you, maximum 5 animals, and Spain refuses animals under 15 weeks. Returning to Canada needs only a valid rabies vaccination certificate for pets over 3 months old.
