Ireland follows the EU baseline — ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait, and a USDA-endorsed EU health certificate with arrival within 10 days — with no titer test from the US. What Ireland adds is process. Dogs need tapeworm treatment (praziquantel) by a vet no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours before scheduled arrival, recorded in the certificate; cats are exempt. And every pet needs advance notice filed via DAFM's portal with a pre-booked compliance check — you may not leave the airport before it's done.

Entry is only legal through designated points: Dublin, Cork or Shannon airports, or Dublin, Ringaskiddy or Rosslare ports. One breed note: XL Bully dogs cannot be imported into Ireland at all.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). Ireland is achievable in under a month; the 21-day post-vaccination wait is the floor. The two Irish traps: the dogs-only tapeworm window measured against your scheduled arrival, and the mandatory advance-notice portal — you cannot just show up.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted and scanned BEFORE the rabies vaccination — a shot given before the chip does not count and must be redone.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
    Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. For a primary vaccination the EU counts the shot day as day 0: your pet cannot enter until 21 days have passed. No titer test is needed from the US. Ireland refuses animals under ~15 weeks — there is no young-animal exception.

  3. File advance notice + book the compliance check (DAFM portal)
    Ireland requires advance notice of your pet's arrival via DAFM's Advance Notice Portal, with a pre-arranged compliance check at your designated entry point — Dublin, Cork or Shannon airport, or Dublin, Ringaskiddy or Rosslare port. You must not leave before the check is done. Book as early as you can; out-of-hours arrivals need prior arrangement.

    A USDA-accredited vet completes the EU non-commercial certificate (via VEHCS); USDA APHIS endorses it. Your pet must arrive within 10 days of endorsement; after entry it covers onward EU travel for 6 months or until the rabies vaccination expires.

  5. Tapeworm treatment by a vet (dogs)
    A vet must administer praziquantel no less than 24 hours and no more than 120 hours (1–5 days) before your dog's SCHEDULED ARRIVAL TIME in Ireland, recorded in the certificate. Cats are exempt. An untreated dog can be refused entry or quarantined.
    The window is measured against scheduled arrival — if your flight slips past the 120-hour mark, the treatment is invalid. Build in slack.

The final week, in order

Within 10 days of arrival: the EU certificate is completed and USDA-endorsed. Within 24–120 hours of scheduled arrival: the tapeworm treatment (dogs). At least a day or two ahead: the DAFM advance notice and compliance-check booking — earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours arrivals. If a flight delay pushes your arrival past the 120-hour tapeworm mark, the treatment is invalid — build in slack.

What Ireland doesn't need

No titer test, no quarantine when compliant, and cats skip the tapeworm entirely. Pets under ~15 weeks are refused — Ireland takes no young-animal exception.
