Guatemala is easy on the way in: no import permit for a pet flying with you, no consular step, and rabies is the only required vaccine (for pets 3 months or older). Add a broad-spectrum parasite treatment and a USDA-accredited vet's certificate, endorsed by APHIS (digital endorsement via VEHCS is accepted), and you're set.

The planning lives on the return: Guatemala is on the CDC's high-rabies-risk list, and the US re-entry rules changed in 2025.

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (from 3 months of age)
    Required for pets 3 months (90 days) or older; younger animals are exempt. The official certificate states no waiting period after the shot and no fixed validity window for Guatemala entry.
    Bringing a dog back to the US? Microchip it BEFORE this rabies shot — Guatemala is CDC high-risk, so an out-of-order shot won't count for US re-entry.

  2. Internal & external parasite treatment

The return trip is the hard part (for dogs)

A dog coming back from Guatemala needs a microchip implanted before its rabies shot, to be 6+ months old, a CDC Dog Import Form, and a USDA-endorsed "Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination" completed before you leave the US. Note that ordinary export health certificates issued after 31 July 2025 are no longer accepted for re-entry — the CDC certification form is what you need. Cats are exempt from all of it.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Guatemala is a CDC high-risk country for dog rabies — set up the return BEFORE you leave. The step people miss: a Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination must be completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA before your dog departs the US (and the microchip must have been implanted before the rabies shot, or the vaccination is invalid for re-entry). Before flying back, also file the free CDC Dog Import Form — a single-entry receipt for your arrival date. Your dog must be at least 6 months old and appear healthy. Skip the pre-departure certification and a US-vaccinated dog can face a CDC-registered facility, revaccination, and quarantine on return.

Cats are exempt — they aren't subject to the CDC dog-import rules and need no rabies paperwork to re-enter (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).

Do I need an import permit for Guatemala?
