People assume a Caribbean island means easy pet travel. The Cayman Islands are the exception: they protect their rabies-free status with a process closer to Japan's than to a beach holiday. You need an ISO microchip (implanted before the rabies vaccination), a rabies shot from 12 weeks of age, a FAVN titer blood test drawn at least 30 days after vaccination, and then — because the US mainland is a "low" rabies-risk origin — your pet may only enter 2 months after that blood draw (the titer stays valid 12 months).
There is no quarantine option. Get everything right and your pet enters freely; get one thing wrong and it can be refused entry and returned, or destroyed, at your expense. That makes the sequencing here genuinely high-stakes.
The requirements, in order
Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.
- ISO microchip implanted (first)A 15-digit ISO microchip must be implanted BEFORE the rabies vaccination. If your pet was vaccinated before being chipped, it must be re-vaccinated. The chip is scanned at every step.
- Rabies vaccination (after the microchip, from 12 weeks old)The primary rabies vaccine must be given after the microchip and no earlier than 12 weeks of age.
- FAVN rabies titer blood draw — starts the 2-month clockBlood for the FAVN titer test (result ≥ 0.5 IU/ml) must be drawn at a DoA-approved lab at least 30 days after the most recent rabies vaccination. Because the US mainland is a 'low' rabies-risk origin, your pet may enter no less than 2 months after this successful blood draw, and the result stays valid for 12 months.Arriving by sea reclassifies you as 'high' risk — a 3-month wait instead of 2. Repeat the titer before the 12-month expiry to stay eligible.
- Routine vaccinations currentCurrent core vaccinations must be recorded on the health certificate — dogs: distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus; cats: panleukopenia, herpesvirus, calicivirus.
- Apply for the import permitYou can open the application file up to 6 months ahead, but the permit is issued only once you've shown full compliance (microchip, vaccination, titer). After complete documents and the fee, the DoA replies within 3 working days. The single-entry permit is valid 14 days from the health-certificate/treatment date.
- Tick & tapeworm treatmentWithin 14 days of travel: tapeworm treatment (praziquantel 5 mg/kg) and a systemic residual-action tick product (fipronil, amitraz, permethrin or an isoxazoline). Shampoos, collars and flea-only products are not accepted.
- Veterinary health certificateA veterinary health certificate, issued within 14 days of travel and valid 14 days from the exam/treatment date. Cayman does not require USDA endorsement (a licensed accredited vet's certificate is accepted), though APHIS suggests it. Bring the original to the port of entry.
- Give 48 hours' arrival noticeNotify the DoA at least 48 hours before arrival with your date, time and flight details.
No quarantine — which cuts both ways
Unlike Australia or New Zealand, Cayman offers no quarantine to absorb a mistake. A valid permit doesn't by itself guarantee entry; every requirement must be met and documented. Two hard limits: no animal may be imported directly from Asia, Africa, or Central/South America; and for dogs, Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa and fighting breeds (and crosses) are banned. Arriving by sea (yacht or cruise) forces the stricter 3-month wait instead of 2.
The final two weeks
Within 14 days of travel: the tick and tapeworm treatment and the veterinary health certificate (which also set the 14-day permit validity), then 48 hours' arrival notice to the Department of Agriculture. Cayman doesn't require USDA endorsement, though APHIS suggests it.

FAQ
- How long does it take to bring a dog to the Cayman Islands?
- About 3 months minimum: rabies vaccination, a FAVN titer drawn at least 30 days later, then entry no sooner than 2 months after that blood draw (for US-mainland pets). The planner computes your exact dates.
- Is there a quarantine option if something's wrong?
- No. A non-compliant animal is refused entry and returned, or destroyed, at the owner's expense — there is no quarantine to fall back on. That's why the order and dates matter so much here.
- Which dogs are banned from the Cayman Islands?
- Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Japanese Tosa, and any fighting-lineage breed or cross. A signed breed declaration and photo are required for dogs.
- Does arriving by cruise ship change anything?
- Yes — arrival by sea reclassifies you as 'high' risk, extending the wait from 2 months to 3 months after the blood draw.
- Is it different for cats?
- The timeline is identical. The breed rules and dog-licensing requirement are dog-only, and the routine-vaccination panel differs by species. Use the cat toggle in the planner.
