Bringing a Dog from the USA to Belize: Requirements & Timeline

Belize is one of the friendlier Central American entries: a BAHA import permit (download the application from baha.org.bz), a current rabies vaccination (a first shot at least 28 days before travel; puppies can't be vaccinated before 12 weeks), the core panel — DHLPP for dogs, FVRCP for cats — deworming within 30 days of departure, and a veterinary certificate issued within 14 days of travel. Helpfully, the certificate needs no USDA endorsement. A BAHA officer inspects your pet on arrival, so notify them 2 working days ahead.

The catch is the trip home: Belize is on the CDC's high-rabies-risk list, so bringing a dog back to the US takes setup before you go.

Minimum lead time: about 0.9 months (28 days). About a month of lead: a first rabies shot needs 28 days, plus a BAHA import permit and a 14-day vet certificate. No USDA endorsement is needed. The real planning is the return to the US.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (28 days before travel for a first shot)
    The rabies vaccination must be current, with date, vaccine name, lot and expiry on the certificate. A first-ever rabies shot must be given at least 28 days before travel, and puppies can't be vaccinated before 12 weeks of age. Adult dogs (15+ months) with a documented history may travel sooner after a booster.
    Bringing a dog back to the US? Microchip it BEFORE this rabies shot — Belize is CDC high-risk, and an out-of-order shot won't count for US re-entry.

  2. Core vaccinations (dogs)
    BAHA requires dogs to be vaccinated against distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and parvovirus (DHLPP).

  3. Deworming (endoparasite treatment)
    Treat against internal parasites with a product registered in the US within 30 days of departure. Your pet must also be free of ticks and fleas and have no fresh or healing wounds when the certificate is issued.

  5. Veterinary health certificate (14-day window)
    A USDA-accredited vet issues the veterinary certificate within 2 weeks (14 days) of travel, attesting your pet is healthy, free of infectious disease and ectoparasites, and vaccinated as above. No USDA APHIS endorsement is required for Belize.

    Send BAHA your arrival date, time and flight number at least 2 working days ahead so a veterinary officer is present for the inspection.

The return trip is the hard part (for dogs)

Because Belize is CDC high-risk, a dog returning to the US needs a microchip implanted before its rabies shot, to be 6+ months old, a CDC Dog Import Form, and US-documented rabies (or a titer). Arrange the microchip and rabies at the same visit as your outbound paperwork. Cats have none of these return requirements.

Permit and inspection

Apply for the BAHA permit ahead of travel, keep the vaccination card current, and email BAHA your flight details 2 working days before arrival so a vet is present. The travel crate must be new or cleaned and disinfected.
