Egypt is straightforward on the way in: no import permit, no microchip requirement, and no rabies titer. You need a current rabies vaccination — given within the last 12 months, with arrival no later than 11 months after the shot — and a USDA-accredited vet's certificate endorsed by APHIS, valid 14 days. The official USDA process lists no consular legalization step (some third-party sites claim one; confirm with the Egyptian embassy if unsure).

The planning lives on the return: Egypt is on the CDC's high-rabies-risk list, and the US re-entry rules changed in 2025.

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (arrive within 11 months of the shot)
    A current rabies vaccination is required: given within the last 12 months, and your pet must arrive in Egypt at least 30 days before the 12-month anniversary — so no later than 11 months after the shot. No minimum age or waiting period is stated for Egypt.
    Bringing a dog back to the US? Microchip it BEFORE this rabies shot and use a US-documented vaccination — Egypt is CDC high-risk, so it matters for re-entry (Egypt itself doesn't require a microchip).

  2. Exam + health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    A USDA-accredited vet inspects your pet and issues the bilateral certificate (e-signature accepted); USDA APHIS ink-endorses and embosses it. The endorsed certificate is valid 14 days from issuance and must travel with your pet. No microchip, titer or import permit is needed for Egypt.

The return trip is the hard part (for dogs)

A dog coming back from Egypt needs a microchip implanted before its rabies shot (even though Egypt itself doesn't require one), to be 6+ months old, a CDC Dog Import Form, and a USDA-endorsed "Certification of U.S.-issued Rabies Vaccination" completed before you leave the US. Ordinary export certificates issued after 31 July 2025 are no longer accepted for re-entry. Cats are exempt from all of it.
