For a cat, Guatemala is easy: no import permit, no consular step, rabies (from 3 months of age), a parasite treatment, and a USDA-accredited vet's certificate endorsed by APHIS. That's the whole list.

Minimum lead time: about 0 months (1 days). Quick to enter: no import permit, only rabies required. And unlike dogs, a cat's trip home is easy.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (from 3 months of age)
Required for pets 3 months (90 days) or older; younger animals are exempt. The official certificate states no waiting period after the shot and no fixed validity window for Guatemala entry.
Bringing a dog back to the US? Microchip it BEFORE this rabies shot — Guatemala is CDC high-risk, so an out-of-order shot won't count for US re-entry.
  2. Internal & external parasite treatment
Treat against endo- and ectoparasites with products approved in the US. The certificate attests this; no fixed day window is specified, so do it at the pre-travel vet visit.
  3. Exam + health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
A USDA-accredited vet examines your pet (found healthy and free of infectious/parasitic disease) and issues the bilateral certificate; USDA APHIS endorses it (digital endorsement via VEHCS accepted). No consular legalization is needed.

No return hassle for cats

Guatemala is CDC high-risk, complicating the return for dogs — but cats are exempt. Nothing special is needed to bring a cat back.
