Cats enter Switzerland on the EU-mirrored chain: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait for a primary shot, and the EU-model certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS within 10 days of arrival. The US is on Switzerland's low-risk list, so no titer. By air, enter via Zurich, Geneva or Basel. Switzerland can even admit young kittens from low-risk countries with a special owner declaration — a rare leniency.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). Achievable in under a month; the 21-day wait is the floor (boosters with no lapse skip it). The docked-ears/tails ban is dogs-only — cats are unaffected.

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    ISO 11784/11785 (15-digit) microchip, implanted BEFORE the rabies vaccination — a shot given before the chip is invalid and must be repeated.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
    Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. A primary vaccination becomes valid 21 days later (vaccination day = day 0) — your pet may enter on day 21 at the earliest. A booster with no lapse in coverage needs no wait.
    No titer test is required — Switzerland classifies the US as a low-risk country. Young animals not yet through the vaccination program may enter from low-risk countries with a special owner declaration (check the FSVO entry tool).

  3. EU-model health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    The same EU-style non-commercial animal health certificate used for EU entry, completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS within the 10 days before arrival. It also covers onward non-commercial travel within the EU/Switzerland (4 months under the current model — confirm the figure under the new certificate model from 1 Oct 2026) or until the rabies vaccination expires. An established EU/Swiss pet passport works instead.

The docked-ears/tails import ban is dogs-only. Cats just need the chip → vaccine → 21-day wait → certificate chain and the customs check on arrival, with up to 5 pets travelling non-commercially.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Good news — Switzerland isn't a CDC high-risk country, so the return is simple. A US-vaccinated dog needs only the free CDC Dog Import Form (a receipt valid 6 months, reusable), a microchip, to be at least 6 months old, and to appear healthy — no titer or endorsed rabies certificate for re-entry. Cats have no CDC requirement either way (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).
