For a cat, Thailand needs an ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination (primary shot at 12+ weeks, then a 21-day wait before you apply for the permit), feline panleukopenia cover, a DLD import permit (r7) applied for 7–60 days before departure (5–7 business days to issue, valid 60 days, 500 baht per animal), and a USDA-endorsed health certificate valid 10 days. No titer, and no quarantine for a compliant, healthy cat.
The requirements, in order
Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.
- ISO microchip implantedAn ISO 11784/11785 microchip whose number appears on every vaccination certificate and the permit application. Implant it BEFORE the rabies vaccination — the CDC requires that order to bring a dog back to the US.
- Rabies vaccination (triggers a 21-day wait)Given after the microchip, with the pet at least 12 weeks old at the time of a primary vaccination. After a FIRST-EVER rabies shot the pet must wait 21 days before you can apply for the import permit; boosters given while a prior valid shot is on record have no wait. No rabies titer test is required for Thailand.
- Core vaccinations (cats)Feline panleukopenia (covered by the core FVRCP vaccine) in addition to rabies. No leptospirosis requirement applies to cats.
- Apply for the DLD import permit (r7)Email the Animal Quarantine Station at your port of entry with the microchip/vaccination records, your passport, itinerary and Thai address. Apply no earlier than 60 and no later than 7 days before departure; it takes 5–7 Thai business days to issue, is valid 60 days, and is 500 baht per animal (paid at the station on arrival). A first rabies shot must be at least 21 days old before you apply.
- Health certificate endorsed by USDA APHISA USDA-accredited vet completes the Thailand health certificate (OHC) and USDA APHIS endorses it. It is valid 10 days from the USDA endorsement, so schedule it in the final 10 days before arrival. Only the ORIGINAL stamped certificate is accepted — it must physically travel with your pet.
- Arrive at a quarantine-station airportAdvance notice is built into the permit application (your flight itinerary and Thai address). Arrive at an airport with an Animal Quarantine Station — Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui or Krabi — where officers inspect your pet and release it if fully compliant.
What's simpler for cats
Cats skip the dog-only leptospirosis vaccine (and its 30-day negative-test alternative) and the rest of the canine DHLPP panel — just rabies plus panleukopenia. They also skip the CDC high-risk process on the trip home, which is the hard part for dogs. Enter at a quarantine-station airport (Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Samui or Krabi). The planner dates every cat step.
The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US
Cats are exempt — they aren't subject to the CDC dog-import rules and need no rabies paperwork to re-enter (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).

FAQ
- How long does it take to bring a cat from the US to Thailand?
- About a month, driven by the 21-day post-rabies wait before you can apply for the DLD permit (which then takes 5–7 business days). No titer is required. The planner computes your dates.
- Is my cat quarantined in Thailand?
- No — a compliant, healthy cat is inspected at the airport quarantine station and released the same day. Quarantine applies only if a pet fails inspection.
- Is the trip home easy for a cat?
- Yes — Thailand is CDC high-risk, which complicates the return for dogs, but cats are exempt from the CDC dog-import rules.
