Bringing a Cat from the USA to Barbados: Requirements & Timeline

For a cat, Barbados needs an ISO microchip implanted before the rabies vaccination, an inactivated rabies vaccine from 12 weeks of age, then a 35-day wait (day of vaccination = day 0) before entry. Add an import permit (valid 6 months) and a USDA-endorsed health certificate (valid 10 days). No rabies titer, and no quarantine when compliant.

Minimum lead time: about 1.2 months (35 days). Plan about 5 weeks. The US is a 'Category 1' country for Barbados, so there's no rabies titer and no quarantine — the 35-day wait after the rabies shot is the only real clock.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    An ISO 11784/11785 microchip is required for every pet, implanted BEFORE (or at the time of) the rabies vaccination — a rabies shot given before the chip does not count.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 35-day wait)
    An inactivated rabies vaccine, given after the microchip when your pet is at least 12 weeks old. 35 full days must pass after the vaccination (day of vaccination = day 0) before your pet may enter; for a multi-dose primary course the wait runs from the final dose. No rabies titer is required from the US.

  3. Obtain the Barbados import permit
    Apply online to Veterinary Services (Ministry of Agriculture) before shipping; the application fee is BDS $25 and the permit is valid 6 months. The official vet needs to see the permit before issuing your health certificate, and the permit and microchip numbers go on the certificate.

  4. Exam + health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    Within 7 days of travel, a USDA-accredited vet examines your pet (including a screwworm check 24–48 hours before export) and completes the Official Export Health Certificate; USDA APHIS endorses it. The certificate is valid 10 days from issue, so travel within that window.

  5. Give 3 working days' arrival notice
    Notify Veterinary Services at least 3 working days before arrival (owner and customs-broker details, date/time, airline and flight number), and the airline must issue a 'Pre-Alert'. Pets clear as cargo at the Animal Reception Centre, Grantley Adams International Airport.

What cats skip

The dog-only steps a cat does not need: the tick + tapeworm (praziquantel) treatment within 7 days of travel, and the heartworm test. Cats also skip the CDC process on the trip home — Barbados isn't a CDC high-risk country, so it's easy either way. The planner dates every cat step.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Good news — Barbados isn't a CDC high-risk country, so the return is simple. A US-vaccinated dog needs only the free CDC Dog Import Form (a receipt valid 6 months, reusable), a microchip, to be at least 6 months old, and to appear healthy — no titer or endorsed rabies certificate for re-entry. Cats have no CDC requirement either way (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).
