Bringing a Cat from the USA to Costa Rica: Requirements & Timeline

Costa Rica is light for cats: no permit when flying with you, no quarantine, no post-vaccination wait. A cat over 3 months needs a valid rabies vaccination plus the feline panel (rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia), a parasite treatment within 15 days of export, and the USDA-endorsed certificate after an exam within 14 days — all doable in a single visit. SENASA's newer guidance asks for a microchip with its number on the certificate.

Minimum lead time: about 0 months (1 days). No waiting period — the rabies vaccine just needs to be valid on entry day. Everything fits in one vet visit about two weeks out.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. Rabies vaccination (valid on entry day)
    Required for all pets over 3 months old; the vaccine must simply be within its labeled validity on the day you enter — Costa Rica imposes no post-vaccination waiting period. Pets 3 months or younger are exempt.
    Dogs also need distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus and leptospirosis vaccinations recorded on the certificate; cats need rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.

  2. Internal & external parasite treatment
    Treatment against endo- and ectoparasites with approved products within 15 days before export, ensuring the animal is free of ticks and other parasites; product, brand, active ingredient and lot number go on the certificate.

  3. Exam + health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    A USDA-accredited vet examines your pet within 2 weeks (14 days) of departure and issues the bilateral certificate; USDA APHIS endorses it digitally via VEHCS (allow a few business days). One vet visit around 10–14 days out can cover the exam, parasite treatment and certificate together.

Costa Rica isn't CDC high-risk, and cats have no CDC return requirements anyway — a healthy cat simply flies home.
