Bringing a Cat from the USA to the UK: Requirements & Timeline

One of the quickest routes for cats — no titer, no quarantine when compliant, and no tapeworm step (that's dogs only).

Because the US is a listed country, Great Britain is a quick route for cats: ISO microchip before the rabies vaccination, vaccination at 12 weeks or older, a 21-day wait (day 1 is the day after the shot), and the Great Britain pet health certificate — completed by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS, with arrival within 10 days. No titer test, and no quarantine when everything is in order.

Minimum lead time: about 0.7 months (21 days). Great Britain is achievable in about three weeks for cats; the 21-day wait is the floor. The tapeworm treatment that catches dog owners doesn't apply to cats at all.

The requirements, in order

Order matters — several steps are only valid if the earlier ones were done first. This is the same sequence the planner above turns into dated deadlines.

  1. ISO microchip implanted
    ISO 11784/11785 microchip, implanted before — or the same day as — the rabies vaccination. If your pet was vaccinated before being chipped, the vaccination doesn't count and must be redone, restarting the 21-day wait.

  2. Rabies vaccination (then a 21-day wait)
    Given at 12 weeks (84 days) of age or older, after the microchip. You must then wait at least 21 full days before entering GB — day 1 is the day after the vaccination. A booster with no break in cover needs no wait; a lapsed vaccine restarts the course and the wait.
    21 days is the legal floor. Some vaccines take up to 30 days to reach immunity — ask your vet, and the certificate's 'valid from' date will reflect it.

  3. GB pet health certificate endorsed by USDA APHIS
    From the US, the only accepted document is the Great Britain pet health certificate (not a pet passport or EU certificate). A USDA-accredited vet completes it and USDA APHIS endorses it; your pet must enter GB within 10 days of issue/endorsement.
    APHIS counts the 10 days from its endorsement date; GOV.UK counts from the vet's issue date — plan against the earlier of the two so a delay can't void it.

What's simpler for cats

The dog tapeworm treatment — the tight 24–120 hour window that trips up dog owners — does not apply to cats. That leaves just chip → vaccine → 21-day wait → GB certificate. Cats still travel as cargo on approved routes, and the same non-compliance penalties (up to 4 months quarantine) apply if a step is missed.

The trip home: bringing your dog back to the US

Good news — United Kingdom (GB) isn't a CDC high-risk country, so the return is simple. A US-vaccinated dog needs only the free CDC Dog Import Form (a receipt valid 6 months, reusable), a microchip, to be at least 6 months old, and to appear healthy — no titer or endorsed rabies certificate for re-entry. Cats have no CDC requirement either way (Hawaii and Guam set their own quarantine even from the mainland).
